The Security Institute Award Categories


The Institute encourages and recognises excellence as a part of its commitment to professional development and raising awareness of what good security looks like.

To honour this recognition The Institute has launched an annual Awards Gala Dinner where individuals and companies going the extra mile are recognised by their peers for their achievements.

The Institute presents 10 different awards:

  1. The Security Institute Award in Memory of ‘Odette Hallowes SOE WWII’
    This award will recognise an individual or team who has contributed significantly to the security of others: this may be a posthumous award or for a living individual/team.
  2. Outstanding Contribution to Security Award’ in memory of George van Schalkwyk
    This award will recognise a Security Institute member who has demonstrated an outstanding contribution to the security profession.
  3. Institute Learner of the Year Award’ in memory of John Aplin
    This award is given to a Security Institute member who has recently (from January 2022 to date) finished their Security Institute Certificate, Diploma or Advanced Diploma qualification in Security Management and demonstrated that they have put their learnings into effective practice.
  4. Academic Achiever of the Year Award’ in memory of Wilf Knight
    The winning nominee will be recognised for outstanding research on a security topic and will be awarded to a university student producing the most innovative and significant dissertation. Nominations are invited from universities which may submit one nomination per department per year. Self-nomination in this category is not permitted.
  5. President’s Award for an Outstanding Young Professional
    An award that celebrates the next generation of security leaders and will recognise a Security Institute member under the age of 35 who has personally had a positive impact on their organisation or the wider security sector.
  6. International Achiever of the Year Award
    This recognises a Security Institute member who has made a significant contribution to security outside the UK.
  7. Volunteer of the Year Award
    This award recognises an Institute member who has made a significant voluntary contribution to the Institute, for example through the Membership Management Advisory Group, Validation Board, special interest groups, Young Members Group, helping out at exhibitions, and other volunteer roles within the SyI.
  8. The EDI Initiative of the Year Award
    An award in recognition of the best contribution or initiative to promote and support the ED and I community in the security sector
  9. Security Innovation or Product of the Year Award
    This award is presented to a security organisation, team or individual that has designed, created or launched training programme, app or initiative to improve security.
  10. Lifetime Achievement Award
    An award celebrating the Lifetime Achievement of a professional in our industry, who has demonstrated an outstanding contribution and lifetime achievement in the security profession.
