Security Management Definitions

Middle/Senior Security Manager (Strategic Lead and/or Influence)

The following is a range of indicators but is not to be considered exhaustive

A person who directs or controls and is responsible for the strategic management of physical, personnel, cyber or technical security through:

  • planning, interpretation or implementation of security policy and/or
  • people, processes or functions and having authority to delegate responsibility to others and/or
  • being a subject matter expert or analyst advising to senior management level or entities on security issues and/or
  • being an appropriately qualified academic or instructor researching or delivering in security-related areas:
    • in person
    • via distance or e-Learning programmes
    • via an accredited third party

First Line Security Manager (Operational/Tactical Control and/or Decision Making)

The following is a range of indicators but is not to be considered exhaustive

  • Manages security staff, functions or processes at a level directly above non-managerial employees (eg: Supervisors, Team Leaders) and/or
  • Focus on immediate operational responsibility (control/coordination/quality and performance monitoring) and/or
  • Responsible for initial decision making and whether to escalate to more senior manager and/or
  • Responsible for assignment of employee tasks and work/shift rotas and/or
  • Guides and supervises staff on a day to day basis and/or
  • Responsibility for the resolution of staff issues and making recommendations and/or
  • Motivation, career planning and performance feedback
