Insider Risk Conference 2025

September 16 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

Date: 16th of September 2025

Location: Glasgow Caledonian University

Insider Risk Glasgow Conference – Applicants Must Register; Registration Ends Monday 24/3/25.

The Security Institute is dedicated to supporting and advancing the work of its members through its Special Interest Groups (SIGs). On 16th September 2025, the Institute’s Insider Risk SIG will host a conference in Glasgow, focusing on the highly pertinent issue of Insider Risk. Attendance will be free for delegates, thanks to sponsorship from SecuriGroup and Glasgow Caledonian University. The conference will take place in the impressive Lantern Room conference suite within the Annie Lennox Building at Glasgow Caledonian University.

The event will begin at 9:30 am with registration and refreshments, followed by a welcome from a senior member of the university’s leadership team. Professor Simon Hepburn, CEO of the Security Institute, will officially open the conference.

Simon has emphasised the significance of this event, stating: “The strength of The Security Institute lies in its members. Conferences like this, supported by our Special Interest Groups, represent the future of professional collaboration and thought leadership in security.”

The opening presentation will be delivered by Dr David BaMaung, Chair of the Insider Risk SIG and an Honorary Professor at the university, alongside Irene Mains, Head of Department for People and Organisations at Glasgow Caledonian University.

David and Irene will present their research, which advocates for a more holistic approach to managing insider risk—one that prioritises human resource management and considers ‘employee vulnerability’ rather than the traditional ‘insider threat’ perspective.

Following this, Gary Stephen, Head of Security at the University of Glasgow, will address the risks faced by academic institutions, including the theft of intellectual property and critical technological advancements by hostile states and other threat actors. He will outline the measures in place to safeguard university staff and students against such threats.

The conference will also explore how a UK government department has tackled the challenge of insider threats and its vision for the future. This session will feature two leading experts: An HM Government personnel and people security expert, and Kate Davies OBE, Senior Security Advisor, Department for International Trade, who will provide a behavioural science perspective of who insiders are, how people become insiders, and the current insider threat. They will discuss how a UK government department has managed to respond to the challenges of insider threat and what it sees at the way forward.

A networking lunch will precede the afternoon session.

Neil Basu QPM, retired Assistant Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Service and former Head of Counter Terrorism Policing in the UK, will share insights from his experience in the police anti-corruption unit. He will discuss the various types of insiders encountered and the organisational vulnerabilities that can be exploited by them.

Following Neil’s presentation, a Panel Discussion will allow delegates to engage directly with all the speakers. The discussion will be moderated by Sarah Austerberry, Vice Chair of The Security Institute and supporting director behind the Insider Risk SIG. The event will conclude at approximately 3:35 pm.

The conference venue is centrally located in Glasgow, less than a five-minute walk from a major bus and rail station. A map will be provided to delegates upon confirmation of their attendance.

Due to limited capacity, interested participants must register their interest. Successful applicants will be notified in due course. We hope to see you there!
