THE ROLE
A vacancy has arisen for a Head of Security, who will be responsible for managing the Security department, consisting of seven full-time members of staff. The main objective of the role is to ensure the safety of School’s pupils, staff and property.
The Head of Security reports to the Director of Operations who, in turn, reports to the Bursar. The Head of Security will also be expected to liaise with the School’s Senior Management Team on a regular basis.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
This job description reflects the core activities of the role and is subject to change as the department and the postholder develop. The School expects that the post-holder will recognise this and will adopt a flexible approach to work. The post-holder will also be expected to undertake such other duties within the scope of the role as may be required by their line manager.
Primary duties
▪ Manage the in-house Security team. This comprises a team of five Security Officers and a Grounds Warden. The office is manned from 8am to 12 midnight, with the period of 12 midnight to 8am covered as an on-call duty. The tasks include security patrols, issuing security badges, monitoring fire and security alarms and issuing keys. The Security Office may also operate as a reception point for the School.
▪ Act as line manager to all security staff and be responsible for training, disciplinary issues and agreeing (in conjunction with the HR department) terms and conditions of employment. The Head of Security takes an active part in staff appraisals and is responsible for ensuring the day-to-day health and safety of security staff.
▪ Be responsible for any specialist agency staff. This includes the engagement of dog handlers to search for explosive materials and drugs. From time to time, agency security staff areals employed to cover for illness, holidays etc.
▪ Provide input to emergency planning for critical incidents such as fire, flood, terrorism or kidnapping. The Head of Security is key to the response to such incidents.
▪ Be the School’s main contact with the police and other security agencies, maintaining regular contacting with them and analysing intelligence etc.
▪ Be responisble for enforcing the School’s Visitor policy. This includes supporting the HR department in vetting contracting staff in accordance with Keeping Children Safe in Education regulations.
▪ Be responsible for securing arrangements at major School events when there are large numbers of visitors, including VIP visitors. This includes liaising with personal protection officers and private security details. The Head of Security must have the skills to ensure that all aspects of security are in place on these occasions.
▪ Take part in the financial planning process including advising on future likely necessary expenditure on security staff and equipment.
▪ In conjunction with the IT department, take a key role in the installation and management of the Schools extensive and growing provision of security systems including CCTV cameras, fire and security alarm systems and access controls.
▪ Be responsible for controlling access to car parks and the system of parking-space allocation.
▪ Attend any relevant meetings including Health & Safety Committee meetings. The post-holder’s responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young persons for whom s/he is responsible or with whom s/he comes into contact will be to adhere to and ensure compliance with the School’s Child Protection and Safeguarding policies and procedures at all times. If in the course of carrying out the duties of the post the post-holder becomes aware of any actual or potential risks to the safety or welfare of children in the School s/he must report any concerns to his/her line manager or the School’s Designated Safeguarding Lead.
