The key duties of a Security Officer are as follows.

  • Controlling vehicular and pedestrian access and exit to/from site
  • Issue of passes using site IT systems

Employment Hours

48 hours (including a break per day)

This is a Military Support Function (MSF) post. Posts are designated MSF when particular skills, competencies and military knowledge are required. Any skills, knowledge and experience you believe pertinent to this vacancy should be expanded upon in your application. Ideally the post should be filled by an individual who has achieved Service staff qualifications. The role of the Corporate STRAP Security Advisor within a Military Support Role is a busy and interesting post which will give the job holder an understanding of broader Strategic Command and PJHQ functions and operations, as well as an insight into partner organisations both within Defence and across wider Government. The job holder will improve their knowledge of Security Policy and Procedures (including for deployed operations), becoming a subject matter expert over the course of their time in post. They will be expected to undertake associated training and development as appropriate.

The successful applicant will provide full administrative and operational support to the Corporate STRAPSO, including undertaking overseas travel to front line commands and Permanent Joint Operating Bases (subject to completion of operational training which includes medical tests and all necessary training courses).

What you will be doing:

  • Supporting the Senior SOC Analyst with Major Incidents and assist the wider SOC team in recovering from security breaches, participating in bridge calls and investigations of security incidents and lessons learned as appropriate.
  • Accountable for detection, identification and triage of security incidents using the provided security tooling and IT Service Management (ITSM) tool.
  • Expand, tune, and enhance rulesets for our SIEM (Security Information and Event Management) tool etc to identify security incidents and reduce false positives.
  • Respond to Information Security related queries from stakeholders e.g. wider Security Team or suppliers.

  • Being a self-starter who is keen to learn about new and emerging technologies and cyber threats and how those threats may apply to a public sector organisation.

This role is within the Physical Security team within the department security unit (DSU). Our unit is responsible for all aspects of the physical, information, IT and personnel security, as well as resilience. The DSU sits within the Integrated Corporate Services function (ICS), providing shared services to the two new departments: the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), and the Department of Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT). The role within the physical team, run by a Grade 6 Security Adviser for Physical and Personnel Security, will be mainly focused on assuring the physical security measures across our national estate.

You will be a part of the Government Security Profession. There are a wide variety of roles, specialisms and career paths for Government Security Professionals who work throughout the Civil Service helping to protect the UK Government and our citizens both at home and overseas.

As well as occasionally deputising for the Security Adviser for Physical and Personnel security, your responsibilities will include:

•  Managing the security assurance programme across the DESNZ and DSIT national estate. This involves working closely with key stakeholders such as Estates, Government Property Agency (GPA), and Private Landlords to maintain an appropriate level of security for each building. This will require semi-regular travel throughout the estate.

•  Monitoring and analysing threats to the physical security of the national estate, then collaborating with landlords and colleagues to ensure effective information sharing and incident response.

•  Engaging stakeholders in mitigations where security risks are identified.

•  Maintaining programme management documentation for the estate such as risk registers, actions logs, threat assessments and remediation reports. This includes regular meetings with GPA to keep them accurate.

•  Leading on cross-team quarterly security meetings for the national estate, including recording agendas, decisions and actions as part of governance documentation.

•  Assisting with the onboarding and offboarding of national buildings as part of the Machinery of Government changes.

•  Working closely with other DSU teams and stakeholders on national estate security projects such as access control changes and secure services.

•  Supporting the DSU in providing up-to-date physical security information to the departments and Partner Organisations on a monthly basis.

•  Contributing to physical security incident management in the London buildings.

•  Performing appropriate secondary duties as the need arises by the management team to maintain cross-functional security resilience and as part of your development.

•  Provide Security Duty Office cover for the Department (about 1 week in every 8).

•  Be a role model for the security community, modelling Civil Service values to champion and develop the profession across government.

Skills and experience

The Financial and Strategic intelligence functions sits at the heart of the IRIS community. You will report to the Deputy Director Head of IRIS. Main Responsibilities

The key duties of a Security Officer are as follows.

Please note that these duties can vary from site to site.

  • Controlling vehicular and pedestrian access and exit to/from site
  • Issue of passes using site IT systems
  • Reporting of environmental issues
  • Issue and receipt of keys
  • Patrolling on foot and in a vehicle
  • Searching of vehicles, baggage, personnel, buildings and open areas
  • Escorting visitors
  • Traffic management
  • Checking identity on site (ad hoc)
  • Writing reports on breaches of security or defects and maintaining daily logs
  • Referral of complaints
  • Reporting MGS infrastructure defects
  • Dealing with demonstrators and intruders as directed by those holding operational control
  • Safeguarding classified information and material
  • Cooperating with other security providers
  • Collaborating with emergency services and invoking emergency procedures
  • Operating and monitoring security systems; CCTV and alarms etc
  • Operating and communicating effectively over the telephone and/or radio
  • Reporting safety hazards and accidents in accordance with current instructions
  • Carrying out, if required, initial action at the scene of any incident
  • Other tasks commensurate with the grade

Travel Requirements

Where close area working arrangements are in place staff may be required to attend other sites within their travel to work area (one hour from their home) on a detached duty basis.

Desirable Experience & Skills:

A background, qualification or interest in the delivery of site security and/or customer service will be an advantage.

Licences

Full UK driving licence due to site requirements.

Employment Hours

48 hours (including breaks). You will normally work 48 hours per week including a daily meal break (43 hours net). This will normally be 4 x 12-hour shifts or 5 x 9.6-hour shifts between the hours of 0600hrs and 2200hrs over the 7-day period, as stipulated by the shift pattern agreed at the Unit depending on site requirements. This will include being rostered in a flexible manner (termed a flexible week) within the shift roster. During the flexible week, the working days and shifts will routinely be stipulated in advance but may be changed at short notice (this should be no less than 48 hours).

MGS applicants are required to attend a medical appointment to undertake a colour perception test

  • Plan and deliver major capital projects and lifecycle refurbishment
