Job description
This is an exciting role in the Transport Security Directorate (TSD) where you will have the opportunity to lead on major cyber projects in a department that is at the centre of keeping the country moving. You will be exposed to Ministers and high-profile stakeholders across government and industry to deliver real impact and improve UK transport’s cyber resilience.
DfT’s TSD leads on national security matters, ranging from counter terrorism and cyber security to science and innovation. Within TSD, the National Security Division (NSD) sits at the centre of the department’s work to mitigate current and emerging National Security threats. We work across transport modes, Government and industry to develop policy and regulations to mitigate threats.
You will be expected to work flexibly and adapt to rapidly changing requirements and priorities across the team, wider Division and Directorate. You will be part of the Department’s response to security or civil contingencies incident. This may include out of hours working on occasion, but we make every effort to allow for your personal circumstances.
TSD invests significantly in training and developing staff to prepare them not just for an interesting and challenging job, but also for a rewarding career in the Government security profession. Our expectation is that our staff will remain in post for at least two years.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities of the role include:
- Providing oversight of the cyber security team’s programme, including tracking progress, holding people to account and communicating risks and issues to senior through effective project and programme management.
- Leading on DfT’s cyber governance to ensure that the Cyber Board runs effectively.
- Delivering a programme of work on time and to budget, working within the cyber security services framework.
- Collaborating and coordinating across a wide range of stakeholders across HMG and industry, using strong communication skills to successfully influence and drive forward outcomes.
- Managing financial and security drivers, scrutinising results and providing a constructive challenge function to suppliers and partners.
- Leading a team of two, working closely with wider teams in NSD on cyber risks and strategy. You will demonstrate leadership and act as a mentor for your team, supporting an inclusive and collaborative environment.
- Be an active and visible leader in NSD and play a full role in the running of the directorate, providing leadership to various corporate work strands.
- Supporting DfT’s response to cyber incidents as required.

Person specification
You will have strong experience working on projects, programme, or operational delivery with the public or private sectors. You will have excellent interpersonal and influencing skills, be articulate and demonstrate confident in dealing with stakeholders, as well as being comfortable handling challenging conversations to gain consensus. You will be a trusted adviser with programme or project experience and the credibility to build positive relationships within and outside of the Department. You will have strong written briefing skills and able to highlight key points in a clear way, ensuring that senior people are aware of the biggest risks we face and the mitigation activity we deliver. You will be able and willing to set the direction of the team, particularly on how we support government efforts on cyber security work.
Additional Information
A minimum of 40% of your working time should be spent at your principal workplace, although requirements to attend other locations for official business, or carry out detached duty in another DfT workplace, will also count towards this level of attendance.
