The Ministry of Defence employs over 50,000 Civil Servants. Within that, the Army Top Level Budget (TLB) employs around 9,000 MOD Civil Servants located at over 300 locations. Ours is a diverse workforce, with roles ranging from trainers, human resources, teachers, firefighters and psychologists to storekeepers, financiers, project and programme managers, and policy secretariat staff. There are many different functions and professions delivering key outputs for the Army. As such using data to aid understanding of our workforce is vital.
The Army’s Information Directorate provides the Chief Information Officer function for the Army, leads the Army’s digitalisation, delivers information exploitation services and orchestrates the delivery of digital programmes. The directorate also provides leadership and coherence across the Cyber and Electro-Magnetic Activities (CEMA), Intelligence and Security functions in the Army. The Director’s vision is: Information is valued, exploited and protected as a critical Army asset to maximise advantage in a trusted Single Information Environment!
The Army Digital Services (ADS) organisation is part of the Information Exploitation (IX) Department which is part of the Directorate of Information within Army Headquarters Andover. ADS is the Army’s IX supplier of choice for the design, development and support of applications and services to provide digital enablement of the Army’s processes. It therefore supports the Army’s ambitious and innovative modernisation and transformation agenda!
ADS enables this digital transformation by developing specific software, hosting applications, including the Army Data Warehouse and conducting data analytics.

Job description
SO3 Compliance fulfils a significant role in the security of the Army Hosting Environment (AHE) and Joint Server Farm (JSF) and is directly responsible for all operational security aspects of the systems; ensuring day-to-day management functions are accurately delegated. The system security officer is a crucial function for ensuring that the AHE and JSF are not susceptible to attack. This includes identifying possible vulnerabilities, reviewing documentation and auditing logs and personnel to ensure an attack has not occurred.
The role will also provide opportunity to assist with the successful delivery of broader digital projects for Army and Defence organisations seeking digital transformation applications and services.
The role will provide an excellent opportunity to develop strong behaviours, as well as develop and improve system security professional skills in a challenging environment. Working as part of the ADS Security team, you will have the opportunity to work with other security professionals across the Army and Defence to ensure the successful implementation of new technology and ways of working. You may be required to travel.

Person specification
Specific responsibilities will include:
- Point of contact with regard to operational security matters relating to AHE and JSF;
- Ensuring that the AHE and JSF facilities are operated and configured in accordance with RMADS/Security Joining Rules requirements;
- Ensuring that those with AHE and JSF operational responsibilities are aware of security risks and requirements;
- Ensuring that system alerts, system logs are appropriately monitored and checked in accordance with RMADS requirements;
- Ensuring that there are no unauthorised changes to the AHE and JSF environment;
- Recording, investigating all security incidents relating to AHE and JSF and ensuring all significant security incidents are reported to the JSyCC through the Army HQ Warning and Reporting Point (WARP) as mandated in JSP440;
- Conducting local compliance reviews and audits and reporting the results of non-compliance and incidents to the Accreditor and Army HQ SWG;
- Regularly review system privilege allocations (especially Administrator level privileges) and to ensure these are appropriately assigned;
- Promulgating specific SyOPs and other operational security notices for AHE and JSF.
Furthermore, the SO3 supports SO2 Compliance to fulfil the ongoing Information Risk Management commitment to circa 120 projects across the Command and Defence. Situations occur where the SO2 requires additional resource to increase the support to a newly established project or security incident.

Qualifications
- Experience working in an Agile digital delivery organisation – desirable.
- CIISP recognised qualification – desirable.
- Experience working in Skills Framework for the Information Age functions – desirable.
