We have a post available based in Whitehall, London in a team of nine MOD civil servants responsible for the Capability Assessment of technical aspects of the cyber threat to MOD. The requirement of these posts is to provide All Source intelligence analysis on the cyber threat to Defence systems and networks.

The post holder should:

  • Hold or be prepared to undertake the Fundamentals of Defence Intelligence, Defence Intelligence IT Course and Defence Intelligence Analysis Module courses and pass the subsequent City and Guilds level 3 exam in intelligence assessment, or equivalent courses and qualifications.
  • Hold or be prepared to undertake the Cyber Foundation Pathway up to Module 4.
  • Have at least two of the following abilities:

We are currently looking to recruit a Senior SOC Analyst within our integrated protective security command. The successful candidate will work from the Agency’s Birmingham office.

The Cyber Security Team leads the strategic response to cyber risks, cyber security function, oversees audit, building internal and external alliances with diverse stakeholders to deliver the NCA’s strategic objectives.

What will the successful Candidate be doing?

If successful you will work within the newly created Security Operations Centre, supporting the Lead Analyst and SOC Manager to run all SOC services. Joining at this time offers the rare opportunity to help shape what the final SOC capability will look like.

Reporting to the Lead Analyst, the Senior Analyst is part of the shift based SOC Team that monitors and responds to any identified event from the security monitoring processes in place. You will be the Agency’s eyes and ears before, during and after a cyber incident. The Senior Analyst leads the shift team during the absences of the Lead Analyst, reporting into the SOC Manager.

The Security Services Group (SSG) provides specialist electronic and physical security advice, compliance. assurance and services to areas of the public sector that require the highest levels of security protection. SSG is the Government’s provider of expert design, installation and maintenance of the highest accredited security systems using both “in-house produced products and those commercially produced and approved for use on the government estate.

Comprising of around 230 civil servants and based at locations throughout the UK and Overseas, SSG’s services are provided to the most sensitive Defence and Government sites.

The role of an SSG field technician offers the successful applicant the chance to work on a variety of technically advanced projects protecting some of the nation’s most important assets.

The position advertised will provide support in relation to the installation and maintenance of security systems, whilst ensuring that a professional, efficient, and cost-effective service is delivered to customers.

Successful applicants will be tasked from home, predominantly working on SSG customer sites throughout Scotland.

Internally, the role will need to work closely with security stakeholders in the three military services and in other business units in MOD to understand MOD security risks and to interpret and explain the vetting policy for a Defence audience.

This is an exciting time to join MOD Vetting; a significant amount of reform is ongoing and the post holder will be expected to assist delivery of project strands related to improving Vetting data, forecasting, and Defence’s Vetting operating model.

Responsibilities

  • Representing MOD’s views in Cabinet Office transformation programmes and policy discussions
  • Liaising across Whitehall, with other security cluster vetting departments
  • Building relationships with vetting policy stakeholders across MOD, to understand the security risks MOD faces
  • Making recommendations about implementing the policy in Defence settings
  • Writing the MOD’s vetting policy guidance and ensuring it continues to be accurate and to support MOD business
  • Assisting Defence stakeholders with vetting policy queries, including the Principal Security Advisers for the main business units (TLB and Enabling Organisations)
  • Undertaking Secretariat work such as responding to Treat Official and Ministerial Correspondence, and developing internal communications on vetting issues

There are other policy issues waiting to be resolved which the postholder will give advice on and there is broad scope to shape the role by getting to understand the risks being faced, and stakeholders relative priorities.

This post is based in MOD Main Building, but there is scope for flexible working.  The rest of the team currently splits their time between working in MOD Main Building and Homeworking. There is an expectation to be in Main Building at least once a week.

  • Due to regular engagement at senior levels, the post holder must demonstrate strong interpersonal and organisational skills.
  • The post holder needs be a self-starter and be able to proactively identify emerging issues and have an aptitude for seeking out solutions to them.
  • Good writing skills are essential
  • Good IT skills

 

Desirable Skills:

  • Excellence in writing to influence and inform
  • Experience of policy work is highly desirable, as is working across government departments

There is no requirement for previous experience of working with the military or in the MOD however previous experience of personnel security policy or vetting is highly desirable.

Security Vetting: Applicants must be willing to undergo the Developed Vetting process. Owing to the nature of the role this is a reserved post.
