Dominic Fortescue, Government Chief Security Officer
10:00 - Science in Security in Government
Developments in science and technology are central to all aspects of security. This session delivered
by the Government Chief Security Officer, Dominic Fortescue will focus on the increasing overlap
between scientific and technological progress and the security risks we face. From behavioural
psychology to data science, now more than ever science represents an integral part of cutting edge
thinking in security. Dominic will discuss that whilst applied science is used against us by a range of
threat actors, the Government Security Function is bringing security professionals together to develop
new capabilities and protect government and its citizens against a range of evolving threats. From
the Covid-19 pandemic to cyber and information security, it is clear that we need a multidisciplinary
understanding of developments in science and technology to fully comprehend their security and
policy implications. Dominic leads the Government Security Function, which seeks to build security
capacity, skills and capabilities across the UK government, and improve our physical, personnel, cyber
and technical security. The GCSO is also Director General of the Government Security Group within
the Cabinet Office, the heart of Government Security responsible for the oversight, coordination and
delivery of protective security within all central government departments, their agencies and arms-
length bodies.
15:00 A speaker from CPNI - Security and Engineering – Why it Matters and Things to Avoid
We are delighted to have a guest speaker join us today from the Centre for the Protection
of National Infrastructure (CPNI), CPNI is the UK’s National technical authority for personnel
and physical security. This presentation will discuss how effective and cost efficient protective
security requires technology, including for example communication systems, access control,
CCTV and VMS, asset tracking, security doors/windows, hostile vehicle mitigation, counter drone
equipment….and many more. How do you harness this technology to make a real difference to
security protecting people and organisations whilst avoiding investments in solutions that don’t
live up to expectations? If you want to know more, you’ll have to join the webinar.
