the state of play of empathy in the world of artificial intelligence. Finally, delegates will be invited to

Adam Thomson - Head of NaCTSO
  15:00
           – Counter Terrorism Security – Art or Science?

‘Risk is a future uncertain event compounded of likelihood and impact’
‘Risk is a game of chance involving dice’

Are we really sure how our security recommendations are backed up by science? If we are clearer
about what is researched, assumed or based on experience we can be more accountable in our
decision making? Adam Thomson spent 20 years as an officer in the Royal Air Force Regiment before
joining North Yorkshire Police on the Direct Entrant (Superintendent) scheme. In 2017 he joined
Counter Terrorism Policing as the Deputy National Coordinator Protect and Prepare, where he oversaw
the expansion of the role of NaCTSO to cover Hostile State Actors and formally incorporate Prepare.
This growth in the role brought an elevation in the rank of Head of NACTSO and in 2019 Adam was
appointed as the first Superintendent Head of NaCTSO. This talk will explore some of the questions
about what can and what cannot be proved by science in the CT security arena and will offer some non-
security based tools that may be considered to reduce the risks these gaps may create.
