         Our Protest & Activism SIG

         has launched

In late March, the Institute launched one of its latest special interest
groups the Protest and Activism SIG. The SIG will be Co-Chaired by
Ray Fellows CSyP MSyI and Kenny Macleod MSyI, with Carl Dakin
CSyP FSyI as the sponsoring Director.

The aim of the Protest and Activism Special Interest Group is to bring
together a wide body of stakeholders and practitioners with a view
to examining the causes, the threats and risks from protest and
activism and the best practices in responding appropriately to it.

Whilst protest is often seen as a force for good, creating positive
change, it is also often used as a ‘cover’ or as an excuse to conduct
unlawful behaviour. It is this unlawful behaviour that brings risk to
organisations and people. The potential for reputational risk to the
security industry, as a whole, through inappropriate or excessive
response to protest is also high.
                                                                                   Ray Fellows CSyP MSyI
With over 30 years security experience garnered from the UK and Protest & Activism SIG
international high risk and corporate environments, Ray Fellows Co-Chair
is currently the CEO of Eclipse Strategic Security Ltd. Having had
a lengthy interest in the causes of protest and activism Ray’s most
recent interest stems from the protests around what is often termed
‘the Arab Spring’ as well as the protests around the growth of the UK
         onshore Oil and Gas industry.
Having observed differing and inconsistent approaches to dealing
with the threats from protest and activism, Ray began to examine
how best to respond appropriately to protest and activism in 2016.

Kenny is a retired Police Superintendent with 30 years’ Service.
He is a former Bronze and Silver Public Order Commander who
         has accumulated significant operational experience in the Police;
particularly in relation to public protest, balancing the rights of
individual protest with the right of other individuals to go about their
lawful activity. He is also a former Security Coordinator (SECCO) and
has planned and successfully delivered VIP and Royal visits.

Having had a lengthy professional interest in the causes of protest
and activism Kenny’s recent interest stems from protests around
the growth of the UK onshore Oil and Gas industry and the growing
climate protests and activism. Kenny Macleod MSyI

Most recently, Kenny has undertaken an advisory, liaison and training Protest & Activism SIG
role within industry and has been delivering these services to a Co-Chair
variety of high profile companies and individuals throughout the UK
         and Europe.
Kenny would like to see the Protest and Activism Special Interest
Group as a focal point for practitioners to develop their awareness of
protest and activism and to develop best practice in responding to it,
         appropriately.
Members can get involved via the Community Platform.
