Today, 33 group memberships have been established amounting to over 750 security professionals who have their membership
paid for by the Civil Service. We are witnessing daily interactions between professionals in the Special Interest Groups, Validation
of new members and special projects. It is an exciting time.
In October, I was privileged to present to the Principal Security Advisors (PSyA) across the Government Security Profession about
the benefits of membership and peer validation. PSyA is a role that not only sets the governance for their department but also
decides on the career pathways that allow GSP personnel to grow in skills and migrate between departments. MOD to DWP or
OFSTED to Cabinet office, there are incentives that keep their Security Professionals engaged and I am sure retention rates will soar
as a result. The PSyA (Heads of Security) cohort have enormous influence and there are many lessons that the wider industry can
benefit from by simply connecting and collaborating with the GSP.
The next steps in this evolution will see an increased engagement with major government departments from Home Office to the
Ministry of Defence, helping to shape the career pathways that will inevitably bleed into the wider industry. Lessons learned from a
cohesive group like the GSP and their career framework will help organisations think about how they can emulate their own career
pathways, developing staff to be better and more confident in their own skills. It will also help to recruit talent into the security
sector with realistic career aspirations. This is the foundation for a more inclusive and capable security workforce in the years to
come.
As we look forward to 2021, I fully expect to see an increase in engagement and when we return to physical events, there will be
greater interaction between the Security Professionals in the Corporate and Private sectors with their Government equals. Courses
and bitesize training will increase, with expertise that has previously been restricted.
As Security Institute members will understand, the network is all-important and a trusted network of screened individuals is all the
more important as we develop new ideas and mitigate emerging threats together.
I am delighted to have this professional capability within the Security Institute because ultimately, it will increase the capability of
all those who engage with us and society will benefit as a result.
