My Journey through the Security
Industry: Breaking Down Barriers
and Paving the Way for ED&I
- By Clarence Hyman MSyI
My journey through the security industry began a
decade ago, when I made the decision to leave the
construction industry behind and take a chance on
a new career path. At the time, my perception of the
security industry was limited to the image of a “man
on the doors” or working at the local Tesco. However, I
soon discovered that there was so much more to this
industry than I had ever imagined.
One of the key factors that helped me navigate my
way through the early years of my security career was
the advice and guidance of mentors. I was fortunate
enough to have people around me who were willing
to share their knowledge and experiences with me,
helping me to map out a career path that would lead
me to where I am today.
I strongly believe that it would be beneficial to invest in
more programs aimed at educating and empowering
the younger generation, particularly those who come
from disadvantaged areas with high poverty and crime
rates. As someone who grew up in one of these areas
myself, I can empathise with the experiences of many
young people facing similar challenges. By providing
access to resources and opportunities that might not
otherwise be available, we can make a tremendous
difference in their lives and help set them on a path
towards success in the security sector.
Throughout my journey, I have always been willing to
take chances when they arose. I started out as a relief
officer, working in a variety of roles before eventually
being promoted to event supervisor. From there, I
progressed to the role of Mobilisation Manager, which
was by far my favorite role due to my love of travel and
the opportunity to meet colleagues from a wide variety
of backgrounds across the country.
