       The Security Institute, ASIS UK

       and BRE collaborate for built

       environment standards event

       - Gareth Hulmes CSyP FSyI

The 4th May 2023 saw members of both The Security
Institute and ASIS UK convene at the BRE headquarters in
Watford for a day packed with learning, discussion and live
       security demonstrations.

For over 100 years, BRE (incorporating the Loss Prevention
Certification Board, or LPCB) has been a leader in the
fields of research, testing and certification for the built
environment, making it the ideal setting for practitioners
to explore the role of standards in improving security
outcomes in the planning, design and construction of
       buildings and infrastructure.

Kindly chaired by Bruce Braes, the morning segment began
with a session led by Richard Flint of BRE, who explained the
theory of the ‘entrepreneurial offender’, and how both risk
and reward play a critical role when selecting performance
standards for security products. The session went on
to introduce the audience to BREs’ security certification
standard LPS 1175: Issue 8 and how this standard has
evolved to provide greater flexibility for specifiers and
       manufacturers alike.

Tommy Trybus, also of BRE, continued the morning
session by introducing the ‘STAVE’ methodology - a
set of principles which aid standards selection – and
identifying the critical differences between LPS 1175
and other forced entry standards in use across
the globe. This was followed by an explanation of
‘certification scope’ and importance of being able to
accurately verify a product’s claimed performance.

Following the lunch and networking break, delegates
divided into two groups for the afternoon sessions.

The BRE physical security team hosted a live lab
                                                              demonstration, exhibiting how commonly available
tools could be used to force entry through a variety
of construction products, using the methodology
                                                              outlined in LPS 1175.
