Such post-nominals identify their users as persons with a given level of qualification, expertise, and
experience in the subject discipline regulated by the institution. They also identify that the user is
subject to a code of professional conduct and to an enquiry procedure in the event of a complaint of
poor professional behaviour or competence being laid against that person. (K.Lawrey FST newsletter
Nov 2020). Learned societies are listed and can be searched against a register maintained by the
UK Government. The Security Institute is listed as The Security Institute. Do your research before
accepting a post nominal as legitimate.

So, assuming that the post nominals are legitimately issued by a Learned society, lets consider their
worth.
As a Soldier, I could identify experience and seniority by the Pre Nominals of rank (Pte, LCpl, Cpl, Sgt/
Lt, Capt, Maj etc) It gave me an idea of time served, competence and management level. Post Nominals
are the civilian substitute for me. However, not all professionals will understand that because the
Police Service is not as hierarchical, and trades do not have that structure at all. They do however,
have qualifications and those come with post nominals too. So, not only do we have the Learned
society post nominals we have others that demonstrate training and educational achievements.
Academic Post Nominals
Degree level education affords the successful student the honour of demonstrating their advanced
learning with post nominals relating to their achievement as listed on the Regulated Qualification
Framework. Batchelors degree (Level 6), Masters degree (Level 7) and Doctoral level achievements
(Level 8). This demonstrates an academic ability but not vocational experience. In the Security Sector it
is widely acknowledged that both have equal importance depending on the role you perform.
CPD and Other Training Related Post Nominals
The key is Continuing Professional development and this is where all other Post Nominals can be
beneficial. There are many, many, invaluable courses available to each discipline of security globally
but I’m focused on the UK when I recognise these. Whether it’s a cyber short course or Protective
security by nature, Courses recognised from RQF level 2 – 6 (accredited by an awarding body) also
demonstrate competence and professional development. They are often more affordable, time
manageable but the learning content is of great value.
So when you see Post nominals, recognise that they demonstrate different things, ethical practice,
peer validation, vocational experience, dedication to CPD, academic and training achievements, it’s a
snapshot of effort and continuous commitment to professionalism.
Those that do not recognise this do not understand that we are trying to professionalise our sector.
A sector that is rarely respected or recognised for the value the professionals bring to societal safety
and security.
Those in the security sector that proudly bear legitimate and hard earned post nominals, I salute you.
