Know your Institute
Rob Kennedy CSyP FSyI
Rob has progressed from a security officer to a Chartered Security Professional (CSyP), holding
strategic roles within the private and public sector. Rob acknowledges that the Institute has
supported my Continual Professional Development and career progress to the highest level. He
studied and gained the Foundation, Bachelors and Master’s degree in security & Risk Management
with the University of Leicester.
Rob now works as a Physical & Personal Security Adviser within the Home Office as part of the
Government Security Centre- People & Physical, tasked with raising the standard of security across
government as part of the Cabinet Office ‘Transforming Government Security’ programme.
Speaking on being elected Rob said:
“The Institute has had such a positive impact and influence on my career to date from joining as a
student then progressing to fellow. I am looking forwards to contributing to the further success and
strategic aims of the SyI to enable both individual members and the wider sector to benefit”
Our Newly Re-Elected Directors
Tony Aston FSyI
Tony was a career Police Officer for 27 years working primarily in the
fields of drugs trafficking and intelligence. He followed that by entering
the UK Defence Industry working as the primary link with Special
Branch, UK Security Services and military security organisations.
Previously, Tony was Chairman of the Defence Industry Security
Association (DISA) and a council member with the joint Foreign
Office, Dept of Trade, Cabinet Office and industry initiative, Security
Information Services for Business Overseas (SISBO).
Tony has served as a Board Director since 2018 chairing the Validation
Board (VB) since that time and the Remuneration Committee since
2019.
Sarah Austerberry CSyP FSyI
Sarah has 22 years of experience working in and with Government security
in the field of strategic security with private and public bodies in the UK
and overseas. She has an academic and business background in protective
security including research, application and strategic consultancy and
specialist knowledge focused on transport security, insider risk and personnel
security. She was HMG’s head of specialism for personnel security as part of
the Government Security Profession.
Sarah was co-opted to the Board in January 2021 to support the Institute’s
development in the areas of personnel security, education, knowledge
transfer and media engagement. She was previously an active member, and
now the sponsoring Director of the Inside Risk SIG.
