The Kickstart Scheme:
Recruiting Young People in Security
As part of the Security Institute's #NextGen initiative,
we are pleased to be supporting the government's
Kickstart Scheme. Through this scheme, we are
supporting the UK Government's mission to help
businesses recruit young people as part of the
national recovery programme to keep Britain moving.
What is the Kickstart Scheme?
The Kickstart Scheme provides funding to create new
job placements for 16 to 24 year olds on Universal
Credit who are at risk of long term unemployment.
The scheme is aimed at the c.750,000 young people
(ONS, 2020) who are out of work or economically
inactive, many of which have been negatively
impacted by the on-going COVID-19 pandemic, and
the UK Goverenment has dedicated a £2bn fund for
the scheme. The Kickstart Scheme allows employers
of all sizes to access funding which covers:
• 100% of the National Minimum Wage (or the
National Living Wage depending on the age of
the participant) for 25 hours per week for a total
of 6 months
• associated employer National Insurance contributions
• employer minimum automatic enrolment contributions
The Employer then also has the choice to top up the pay or the hours as needed.
The placement can last up to a maximum of 6 months with government funding. After this, the employer can offer permanent
employment to the young person or let them find other opportunities elsewhere.
The Security Institute is acting as a Kickstart gateway to help organisations provide work experience, for single employers that are
not able to offer the minimum of 30 job placements required to apply to the scheme independently.
