‘Being There’:

The new ‘Emotional First-Aid

Online Training Course

If the Covid-19 global pandemic has taught us anything, it is that none of us are immune
from emotional stress or anxiety. To help people develop the right skills and approach to
support others when they need it the Security Institute alongside Amica Interactive and
Olive Group has launched the ‘Being There’ programme. The ‘Being There’ programme is
an ‘emotional first-aid’ skills that could prove life-saving when someone is experiencing
emotional distress. We can learn to be there for someone when they need us to be. You
may be the first point of contact for someone in distress.

‘Being There’ teaches active listening, self-awareness, crisis intervention and ultimately helps
people to be more available and open to others. The course is divided into nine interactive
modules and has already been trialled by a sports club, trade unions and a nursing
organisation, as well as many individuals with great success.

The course is based on the highly-sought-after in-person workshops
that Dr Smyth has been giving internationally to organisations,
institutions and individuals. Dr. Derek Smyth is a graduate of University
College Dublin, The Angelicum University Rome and the Institute for
Creative Counseling and Psychotherapy. He has also received his
Doctorate in Psychology from CCU.

Delivered entirely online through video and interactive content, the
course is not reliant on in-person training which is particularly useful
in our post-COVID lives. In addition, the “Being There” course is
accessible to all with no prior experience required, the programme
offers practical tools from the very beginning that can be immediately
integrated into a person’s approach.
