Our commitment to being a socially responsible organisation is central to the way in which we operate at the
Corporate Social Responsibility
Security Institute. We have a responsibility both in general as a professional body, and specifically as champions
for societal security, to operate for the benefit of society and to be inclusive, inspirational and empowering in our
practices.
Everything we do as an Institute promotes activities that bring social benefits. We support the continuing
development of our members and others who access our services, and that of our organisational partners in
government, industry and academia. We recognise that, with well over 3,000 members and growing, we are
building significant capability to influence and make a substantial contribution to security practice.
We take an active part in championing and supporting social causes. Our Next Generation in Security (NextGen)
initiative, detailed overleaf, is the centrepiece of our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) commitment, but there
are a number of strands to our activities, which fall under three headings: community, people and environment.
Community
Our commitment to playing a positive role in society is demonstrated in our culture and activities which involve and
promote volunteering, campaigning and fundraising:
• As an organisation that is run by members, for members, volunteering is at the heart of our culture, and
includes supporting one another through our mentoring scheme.
• In our engagement with young people through our NextGen initiative, we are seeking to enhance the
professionalisation of security by inspiring more young people to consider a security. The initiative comprises
an active partnership with the national Volunteer Police Cadets organisation, and supporting disadvantaged
young people by providing employability skills and mentoring through our Secure Futures Programme in
conjunction with the EY Foundation.
• In conjunction with the BSIA and the Security Commonwealth, we are campaigning to improve perceptions of
frontline security.
• In supporting the Living Wage movement and beginning with our own practices, we seek to demonstrate our
commitment to decent wages across the security sector for the benefit not only of security employees, but also
our society which they help to keep safe.
• We aim to promote equal opportunity, diversity and inclusion across the security sector, having recently
launched our new Inclusive Security Special Interest Group to promote positive change, share best practice
and inform the Institute’s own agenda and practices.
• As signatories of the Armed Forces Covenant, “a promise by the nation ensuring that those who serve or who
have served in the armed forces, and their families, are treated fairly”, we actively communicate that we are an
armed-forces friendly organisation. We support the resettlement of ex-services personnel into security, offer
a 25% discount on our distance learning courses via the Defence Discount website as part of our pledge, and
recognise and remember the contribution and service of British and Commonwealth military and service men
and women who have been affected by armed conflict by supporting Remembrance and Armistice day.
• In 2019-20 we raised funds for the charities Send a Cow, Felix Fund: The Bomb Disposal Charity, Cancer
Research and Captain Tom Moore’s NHS appeal.
• Members who receive vouchers towards Institute events for nominating new members can choose instead to
donate the funds to Institute charitable causes. Donations in 2020-21 will contribute to the funding of places
on our NextGen EY Foundation Secure Futures Programme.
