Julie Nel MSyI - Chair
On the 24th July 2023, Julie Nel MSyI become our new Chair. She was
voted on to the Board by the membership at the 2023 AGM and she
took over from Peter Lavery FSyI, who completed nearly seven years on
the Board.
Julie brings with her a wealth of senior leadership experience from an
impressive 35-year career spanning the UK military, law enforcement,
Government, and the private sector. Julie specialises in intelligence and
strategic security threat management, and has also served as a UK Law
Enforcement Director of Intelligence and national lead for intelligence in
His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services
(HMICFRS).
The previous Chair, Peter Lavery FSyI, said: “I was delighted to see Julie Nel elected as the next Institute
Chair, which was ratified before our last Board meeting. The Security Institute will appreciate and benefit
from a new Chair and several new Directors with renewed energy and ideas to maintain the momentum
of both growth and influence.”
Chair’s Update:
Julie Nel MSyI
It is a pleasure to be writing my first ‘Chair’s Update’ for The Security Institute, having taken over at
the end of July. It has been a whirlwind of activity over the last few months, and I am sure you have all
been following various news and events updates via our emails, website, and social media outlets.
There have been changes within our Head Office team, notably at Chief Executive (CE) level, and I am
pleased to have Frank Cannon, who was Deputy Chair, volunteer to step in as Interim CE whilst we go
through a recruitment process for a permanent CE. We also have a new Operations Manager, Wes
Norton, who has made an impressive impact in supporting the HO team and operations and it’s been
super to have him on board. I am sure you will start to get to know the Head Office team far more
over the next few months as they engage with members, partners and stakeholders, and who sits
within their various areas of responsibility.
Our new Board started work in earnest in June following our first Board meeting and a day and a half
spent discussing future strategies for The Security Institute. Each Director has been given a lead area
to support and develop in alignment with our fabulous team at Head Office.
As a Board it was clear to us that The Security Institute has grown exponentially over the last few
years, however, what hasn’t grown is the organisational structure and resources that supports this
membership and engagement growth. The growth displays the excellent work completed by previous
Chairs, Boards and Head Office Team. We now need to build on those foundations and ensure we are
resilient enough to keep delivering an excellent service and membership experience and importantly
continue to grow, develop, and influence across the security industry. We have therefore, developed a
three-year strategy that underpins this.
