CPD Scheme
The Security Institute is wholly committed to raising standards in the
security profession and always encourages practitioners to think about
how they can continue to develop while at the same time helping and
supporting their peers. The Security Institute’s CPD scheme was launched
in 2010 and is now generally recognised as the scheme to belong to.
We believe that no matter where a security professional currently sits within the industry, be it controlling some global security scheme
or manning the shopping centre floor, the need to demonstrate CPD matters even more today, as the sector moves with more pace, to
becoming accepted as a true profession. And membership of the Security Institute is not a prerequisite.
The toolkit is purposefully designed to better the security industry as a whole, which in turn benefits the much wider public community.
Importantly, CPD assists individuals to regularly focus on how they can become a more competent and effective sector-focused
professional. Training and learning increase confidence and overall capability and actively boost career aspirations. Those who engage
in CPD can adapt positively to changes in work/industry requirements, with the recording of CPD providing demonstrable evidence
of ongoing professional development. Above all, perhaps, CPD shows a clear commitment to self-development and professionalism,
allowing individuals to identify knowledge gaps and duly resolve these in what is a recognisable approach towards improvement.
One of the strengths of the Security Institute scheme is that is open to everyone. The toolkit is available to any security professional, as
is submitting and on completion of the necessary points, receiving a Certificate of Achievement. All at no cost to the individual. It is the
Security Institutes way of saying “thank you” to those who wish not only to enhance their own standing, but the standing of the entire
security sector. The toolbox also recognises the vital contributions that individuals make in order to help develop others.
The scheme is in its 10th year, and is compulsory for Chartered Security Professionals (irrespective of their being members of the
Institute or not); Fellows of the Institute and Board Directors of the Institute, all of whom complete 36 points annually. In total, there
were 410 professionals that participated in the scheme (see the graph below).
In addition to organisations such as the Association of Security Consultants; Defence Industry Security Association; International
Professional Security Association; National Association for Healthcare Security all of whom have specific activity recorded on the Security
Institute Toolbox, they and some 65 other bodies are all CPD Partners.
The objective throughout 2019 was to consolidate all the good works that had gone on before; the partnerships forged with specialist
security areas; etc. This has happened and we have welcomed a number of new bodies who have their ‘special’ requirements reflected
in the Toolkit. (Continued).
