Our Directors
The following Members and Fellows of the Institute currently make up the Board of Directors:
Professor Alison Wakefield CSyP FSyI
Chairman
Alison leads the Board of Directors and is responsible for focusing it on strategic matters
and fostering effectiveness, setting high corporate governance standards, ensuring effective
communication with Institute members on matters of governance and strategy, and acting as a
sounding board and mentor to the Chief Executive. She also supports the day-to-day leadership
of the Institute as a member of the Senior Leadership Team in conjunction with the Deputy and
Vice Chairmen and Chief Executive, Chairs the Ethics Committee, is a member of the Remuneration
Committee, and serves as Academic Adviser to the Chartered Security Professionals Registration
Authority. Holding a PhD from the University of Cambridge, in her day job she is Professor of
Criminology and Security Studies at the University of West London.
Peter Lavery FSyI
Deputy Chairman
Serving as Deputy Chairman and member of the Senior Leadership Team, Peter also chairs the
Audit Committee and leads on external engagement within the Institute, overseeing numerous
initiatives to engage the UK Government, security sector and wider society to champion the security
profession and its professionals whilst contributing to overall societal security. Peter is a Trustee
of the Cross- Sector Safety and Security Communications (CSSC) charity and also a member of the
London Resilience Forum (business sector panel), contributing to policy on Brexit, terrorism attacks
and COVID-19. Following a career in the British Army, Peter Lavery has worked in corporate security
across the manufacturing, finance, telecommunications and real estate sectors.
Jonathan Schulten FSyI
Vice Chairman
Jonathan is Vice Chairman and a member of the Senior Leadership Team, also chairing the Risk
Committee and leading on the development of internal policies. Within a professional capacity,
Jonathan works in protective security as the head of security and resilience for a FTSE100 company.
This follows his career working in the police, where he specialised as a Counter Terrorism Security
Coordinator (CT SecCo) in the Protective Security Command at New Scotland Yard.
Tony Aston FSyI (Rtd)
Director of Membership Validation
Tony is Chairman of the Validation Board, and also chairs the Institute’s Remuneration Committee.
In addition, he has led review projects concerning Institute compliance with data protection
legislation, ethical and disciplinary processes and the Institute Regulations and Articles of
Association. Tony had long and successful careers with the police service and in the UK defence
industry, retiring in 2017.
